a misdemeanor to knowingly and willfully make a threat to take the life of, kidnap, or cause physical injury
(b) A person may not knowingly and willfully make a threat to take the life of, kidnap, or cause physical injury to a State official, a local official, a deputy State’s Attorney, an assistant State’s Attorney, an assistant Public Defender, OR A CORRECTIONAL OFFICER.
If these are crimes, it should not matter if the person against whom the crime is committed is a government employee or a private citizen. This bill sets government employees apart from private Marylanders.
Last year, an almost identical bill passed – it added State’s Attorneys and Public Defenders (as above). The bill passed with only one dissenting vote. So this year’s bill, adding corrections officers, is very likely to pass unless people email the committee to object.
