Bills with hearings Tuesday, 1/28/14

Published on 27 January, 2014 by Elizabeth

MD State House AnnapolisThe following bills have hearings on Tuesday.  This means there’s time to email the committees to make sure they know how you feel about this legislation.

The sort of good but need amendments bills:

HB 214 proposes a sort of, “castle doctrine”.  The bill defines when this doctrine applies.

HB 116 proposes to require police to wear video cameras on their uniforms while on duty.  This is a good idea but the bill has a lot of weaknesses that will not protect the People.

The bad:

HB 32/SB 442 propose to exempt police from window tinting law.  This is a blanket exemption.  Remember the videos last summer with Baltimore City Police asleep in their cruisers?

HB 88/SB 281 propose to ready the MVA to collect women’s names for Selective Service registration.

The ugly:

HB 29 seeks to give illegal immigrants special privileges.  If person A has an administrative warrant for an immigration violation, Person A would not be allowed to be detained under this bill.  However, if person B has an administrative warrant for a parking violation, person B may be detained.  HEARING CANCELED

SB 28/HB 333 propose to reduce the burden of proof for protective orders.  This has many consequences, listed in the writeup.

Please visit the writeups, linked above, for these bills and send emails to the committees (in one click) to make your voice heard.
